The USD/JPY has been planted in a range for months. Price has failed to trend by not making new lows or highs since August. Currently support lies at the August 19th low at 75.93. Resistance is established at the September 9th high of 77.84, completing our 191 pip range. Traders have multiple options here, looking for either a breakout or for range bound conditions to continue.
Taking Price in to a 4Hour chart we can see our established support and resistance lines. Using the news as catalyst traders can begin placing entry orders for a breakout. Entry’s should be placed over the previously discussed September high of 77.84. Traders preferring to trade manually may look for a candle close above this level.
My preference is to buy a breakout of the USD/JPY over previous highs. Entry’s should be placed over the 78.00 figure with Stops should be placed at half the distance of the previous range at 77.00. Limits should look for a minimum 200 pip gain for a clear 1:2 risk/reward ratio. Alternative scenarios include price continuing to range between established support and resistance Additional Resources Support and Resistance Video How to Trade Breakouts --- Written by Walker England , To contact Walker , please email Instructor@DailyFX.Com. (Created using FXCM’s Marketscope 2.0 charts) I think the Swiss Franc (CHF) is the currency to pair it against making the AUDCHF pair the trend for the week. The price is above the 200 Day SMA (blue line) and price is testing highs from September. If those September highs are broken, then prices would be trading at levels not seen for 5 months. Therefore, we are looking for buying opportunities as buying the pair would be buying the AUD. One way to trade this would be a breakout out trade with a bullish bias.
(Created using FXCM’s Marketscope 2.0 charts) A common way traders use breakouts is with price channels (also known as Donchian Channels). Wait to see if prices break above .9308 to buy. Place a stop loss just below the lower channel. This will use an open limit meaning we’ll manually trail the stop loss if the lower price channel moves higher. Keep in mind that there are many different time frames of trends in the market today. A position trader may consider a weekly and possibly a daily trend in their analysis. A swing trader may use a 2 hr to daily trend when filtering their trades. A day trader and scalper may use a 30 minute to 2 hr trend. Taking Price in to a 4Hour chart we can better see the USDollar moving in a wedge pattern. Resistance is firmly formed at 9,810 by matching up the October 13th and 18th highs. Despite rallying strong for the month of November, the USDollar has yet to break resistance to form new highs. Breakout traders will see this to set entry orders above this resistance level anticipating price to break higher highs.
My preference is to buy the USDollar on a break of resistance. Entry orders should be placed over 9,820. Stops should be placed below support at 9,720. Limits should look for a minimum of 100 pips at 9,920 for a clear 1:2 Risk/ Reward scenario. Alternative scenarios include price trading under resistance and breaking under the 9,665 low. (Created using FXCM’s Marketscope 2.0 charts) The benefit of breakout trades is that they do not require any indicators on your chart. Take a clean chart and identify levels of support. I have included the 200 day Simple Moving Average (blue line) as that is often used by large institutions as a level of support. Horizontal support rests at the low of Friday’s candle (1.4055). Additionally, the 200 SMA is nearby at 1.3940. This congestion zone of 1.3940 to 1.4055 will likely provide at a minimum temporary support for prices should they fall further. The Entry and Stop Loss Place an entry order to sell 1 pip below the support level or at 1.3940. When identifying our stop placement, scale down to a smaller time frame chart (between 1hr and 4hr time frame). Place the stop loss just above the swing high in this case because we are creating a sell entry order. Now, take twice the distance of your stop loss and project that from your entry point for a take profit level. One of the important rules of trade management we discuss inside the DailyFX EDU webinars is risking less than 5% of your account on all open trades. ( Here is a short video on Money Management of trades. ) The benefit of a breakout type of strategy is that we can be wrong on the trading idea, meaning the price of the EURUSD can move straight higher from here, yet we miss out on a losing trade. As a trader, not only do I want to enter into winning trades, but I also want to be kept out of losing trades. A breakout style of trading can help navigate volatile waters and keep you out of some losing trades.
